אִשָּׁה

H801 noun

SILEX Entry

Root אשׁ to burn, consume by fire, ignite

Definition

A sacrificial offering made by fire, frequently referring to portions of animal or grain offerings designated to be burned on the altar as an act of worship or appeasement. In priestly texts, designates the act or material of burning (especially of portions reserved for YHWH), not restricted to whole burnt offerings but encompassing multiple types of sacrificial offerings consuming part or all of the offering by flame.

Semantic Range

portion of a sacrifice burnt on the altar, fire-offering, offering by fire (including animal and grain offerings), burnt sacrifice, act of burning sacrificial portions

Root / Etymology

Derived from the root אשׁ (aleph-shin), meaning 'fire'. The terminal feminine ending -ה (-ah) yields a term literally denoting 'that which is (for) fire' or 'fire-offering'. This is linguistically and conceptually distinct from אִשָּׁה (woman, wife, H802), despite the identical spelling in Hebrew.

Historical & Contextual Notes

In biblical texts, אִשָּׁה refers specifically to sacrificial elements consumed by fire, especially in priestly and cultic contexts (e.g. Lev 1:9, 2:2, 3:5). The term can denote both an entire burnt offering (עֹלָה) and portions of other offerings (such as the fat of a שְׁלָמִים or a מִנְחָה) when burned on the altar. Its use is technical and almost exclusive to the priestly regulations of Leviticus, Numbers, and related passages. It does not refer generally to 'sacrifice' but marks the fire-consumed part dedicated directly to YHWH. English translations often render אִשָּׁה as 'offering made by fire,' but this can obscure its technical scope limited to the portions actually burned. In contrast to זֶבַח (sacrifice, generally), חַטָּאת (sin-offering), or עֹלָה (whole burnt offering), אִשָּׁה denotes both a mode (by fire) and the act/material offered. In later Jewish tradition, the term continues in liturgical language but with broadened application. Care must be taken not to confuse it with the common term for woman/wife (H802), although the difference is clear by context.

Original Strong's Gloss (1890)

the same as אֶשָּׁה, but used in a liturgical sense; properly, a burnt-offering; but occasionally of any sacrifice; (offering, sacrifice), (made) by fire.
