H4184 verb
SILEX Entry
Definition
To depart from a location or from proximity, to move away, withdraw, or recede; by extension, to remove or let go. The verb is often used of physical or metaphorical departure, including removal from a position, ceasing to be present or operative, or the act of shifting away from something or someone. It can express withdrawal, loss of status or blessing, or the reversal of an action or condition.
Semantic Range
to depart, move away, withdraw (from a place or person); to remove, to be removed or let go; to cease being present; to recede or decline (position, blessing, favor)
Root / Etymology
Root מוּשׁ (m-w-sh). The root מוּשׁ relates broadly to the act of moving or departing, either physically or figuratively. The verb form derives this sense and is used in contexts implying movement away or cessation, rather than the act of touching or handling.
Historical & Contextual Notes
Although earlier lexica (and Strong's) render the meaning as 'to touch' or 'handle,' examination of biblical occurrences indicates that the core meaning 'to depart, remove, recede' is primary; for example, in Genesis 49:10 (the scepter shall not depart from Judah) as well as several texts in the Psalms and Prophets. There is no clear biblical usage of מוּשׁ with the meaning 'to touch' or 'handle' (for which Hebrew employs נגע or משש for 'to feel, grope'). Most English translations correctly render מוּשׁ as 'depart' or 'remove,' but the translation 'to touch' seen in some older lexica stems from confusion with the unrelated root משש (to feel, grope). In post-biblical Hebrew (Mishnaic and later) and in cognate languages, the sense 'to touch' also appears, but this is not reflected in the Hebrew Bible itself.
Original Strong's Gloss (1890)
a primitive root; to touch; feel, handle.
