Definition
To know, to become aware of, or to perceive facts or information, often through observation or experience. The Aramaic verb יְדַע is used primarily in contexts concerning knowledge or awareness, either gained directly (by seeing, experience) or understood by inference. The verb extends to a range of applications—knowing facts, understanding circumstances, recognizing persons, being acquainted with, and, in some cases, making something known to others or instructing.
Semantic Range
to know, understand, perceive, recognize, be familiar with, make known, inform, instruct, declare, certify
Root / Etymology
Root: ידע. The root ידע (yada‘) in both Hebrew and Aramaic fundamentally means 'to know, perceive, be aware.' יְדַע is the Peal (G) stem of the verb in Imperial Aramaic and Jewish Literary Aramaic, structurally corresponding to Hebrew יָדַע but following standard Aramaic phonology and morphology. The form reflects the regular sound shifts and patterns from Hebrew to Aramaic.
Historical & Contextual Notes
In the Hebrew Bible, יְדַע appears in the Aramaic sections (primarily Daniel and Ezra) and functions analogously to the Hebrew יָדַע. In the contexts of Daniel and Ezra, it refers to both cognitive apprehension ('know, perceive, understand') and the communication or learning of information ('make known, inform, teach'). Because Aramaic was the language of administration and wider communication in the Persian period and after, this verb often conveys official or courtly recognition of facts or decrees. At times, it can extend to the idea of 'certifying' or making something officially known, especially in legal or governmental contexts. The translation tradition, especially in English, often renders it simply as 'know,' but the verb's range also includes causative or declarative actions, as in 'make known' or 'declare.' Euphemistic or deeply idiomatic senses (such as sexual union, as sometimes with Hebrew ידע) are not prominent in its Aramaic usage found in the Bible.
