Standard English translations (e.g., 'oracle,' 'divine answer,' 'revelation') can both over-specify and under-specify the term: χρηματισμός may refer to any authoritative utterance (not automatically a predictive prophecy) and is not limited to oracles of classical pagan sanctuaries. In Romans 11:4, the term denotes the content of a divine answer to a prophet. The term is much rarer than the related χρηματισμός (for a message), and distinguished from προφητεία (prophecy, which more specifically denotes inspired speech).
