David, in his old age, appoints Solomon as king over Israel and gathers the leaders, priests, and Levites to organize them for temple service and worship.[1][2] David reorganizes the Levites' duties, lowering the service age from 30 to 20 years old, and assigns them specific roles including assisting the priests, maintaining the temple, leading worship with musical instruments, serving as officials and judges, and acting as gatekeepers, since YHWH has given Israel rest and the tabernacle will now permanently reside in Jerusalem.[1][2]
